Is Balayage right for you?

by | Dec 17, 2020 | Hair Coloring

You have probably heard of the term Balayage before but might not be completely certain what Balayage is or if it’s the right choice for your next hair salon appointment. Balayage is a hair lightening technique that has become immensely popular over the last few years. It is an alternative to traditional foil highlights that can create a beautiful, fairly low-maintenance, lighter look. Don’t get confused though, as it is technically an application technique that a colorist will use that can achieve many different looks. Let’s breakdown the pros and cons of Balayage to help determine if it is right for you.

Life is more beautiful with Balayage – anonymous

Balayage is a French word that essentially means “to sweep.” This coloring technique has the potential to deliver a more natural-looking highlight because the process typically begins with a softer application at the root. The technique is typically associated with being blonde, but Balayage can also be used to create other looks such as caramel or espresso.

How does Balayage work?

Well rather than the colorist folding your hair into foils, as in the traditional style of highlighting, the Balayage technique is done by applying the color in a painting process. This painting process gives a colorist a lot more artistic freedom because it is essentially a freehand method. The end result can make your hair look more organic and natural.

Is Balayage Right for You?

Not necessarily is the quick answer, because even if you want the Balayage look your colorist may have another application that is a better fit for you. Focus less on the application and more on making sure your colorist understands your desired look. Try to bring images that reflect the look you are trying to achieve. The decision will ultimately depend on the state of your hair and your history with color. Best to leave the application up to the professionals but it certainly helps to mention that Balayage is the look you are trying to achieve.

One of the best parts about Balayage compared to traditional highlights is maintenance. Your hair will grow out softer and more naturally with fewer regrowth lines. As traditional Balayage applications generate a softer more dimensional look, you may require more visits to the hair salon if your goal is to have the “Balayage look” with less dimension.

No matter what kind of hairstyle you have – Balayage can look stunning. There are plenty of ways to customize your look. If you are interested in Balayage feel free to view our color services and contact us for a consultation.
